Coaches Code

As a coach in AYSO Region 89, I believe that my primary goal is to provide a learning experience for the players, which improves their self confidence and self-esteem. To a lesser extent, but also important, are the lessons from team play, the benefit of improved physical conditioning, and the skills of soccer.

To achieve these goals, I will adhere to the following code:

I recognize that children learn by example and my behavior is critical. I will therefore, at all times, conduct myself in a gentlemanly and sportsmanlike manner. I will not openly criticize players or officials. I will not swear and will avoid losing my temper.

Children learn best by positive reinforcement. I will praise for success, encourage during failure, and never ridicule or chastise player.

I recognize a responsibility to all players, not just the strong ones. I will establish goals for each player and devote equal attention to all.

Proper discipline is required for an effective practice. Being overly strict can undermine the players best efforts. I will work hard to maintain proper balance.

I understand that I cannot take playing privilegas away. When discipline problems occur I will work with the player first, parents second, if necessary the Division Representative and my Program Director.

Children respond best to teachers who are well organized and know what they are doing. I will continue to improve my knowledge of coaching by attending clinics.

The goals of AYSO Region 89 do not require a winning season. I will judge my own performance not on the team's record, but on how well the individual players progress toward the goals that I have established.
